CE Regulations: Safety Compliance for Headphones

CE is a safety and health requirement to guarantee that products are fulfilling the safety directives in the European area.

Chemical regulation for raw material of headphones and it’s accessories in the US and Canada

CA Prop 65, Restriction of Heavy Metals/7P

Compared with Europe, the US had an easing policy in chemical compliance.

In addition, it’s also acceptable if the headphones supplier can provide the raw material testing report.

This method is not working when it comes to Europe.

CA Prop 65 is California law to limit the Hazardous Substances for products, which works for all products intend to sell at the California area.

Restriction of Heavy Metals also called 7P cause it mainly contains seven Phthalates: BBP, DEHP, DIDP, DINP, DNOP, DBP, and DNHP.

And of course, metal materials are excluded from the above Phthalates requirements.

TSSA

When it comes to headphones, TSSA is used to verify the stuffing materials for both ear cups and carry case in Canada.

The headphones factory is required to upload the application and submit the payment annually in both Quebec and Manitoba.
In 10 business days, Quebec will send you the stuffing and upholstery permit.

Then, you need to print the stuffing information of headphone ear cups and registration numbers in English and French at the bottom of the color box.

Safety Compliance for Headphones in the US and Canada

FCC

All the consumer electronic products sell in the US should comply with FCC rules, the headphone is no exception.

Instead of just having silk-screen printed CE mark on the headphones, FCC claims to mark FCC ID on the headphones.

In this way, you will verify the FCC certification and testing report much more easily.

There is a detail that most headphone factories may ignore but which is very important: to list the lithium-ion battery (if have) warnings, FCC information, and FCC ID in the instruction manual.

RSS210 / RSS247

Just like CE in Europe, FCC in the US, C-tick in Australia, Canada has the RSS to regulate the effect of radio apparatus operation.

Actually, the issue of RSS247 is to substitute the appendix 8 and 9 of RSS-210 in 2015.

In the case of headphones, all the general Bluetooth headphones should be certificated with RSS247; while headphones with a transmitter, such as FM headphones, RF headphones (916Mhz and 2.4Ghz) are in the scope of RSS210.
